IWSC Spirit GOLD Outstanding 98 points, Irish Whiskey Trophy 2025

Judges Tasting Notes: ‘Perfumed and inviting, offering a complex aromatic display of puréed orchard fruit, biscuity grain and melted chocolate. The smoky palate reveals a creamy sweetness with hints of banana bread, before to a long, savoury finish of cocoa cake and citrus. Outstanding!’

‘Quite possibly one of the finest blended Irish whiskeys I’ve ever been lucky enough to try. it contains every permissible grain (barley, malt, wheat, oat, rye and maize) along with every type of Irish whiskey (malt, pot still, grain) before being aged in stout casks. A bold and rather brilliant release from the Blackwater Team.’ Oisin Davis, Business Post

‘One of the most interesting whiskeys unveiled at Whiskey Live 2024. This release from Blackwater Distillery showcases the 3 styles of Irish whiskey – grain, single malt and pot still.’ Irish Whiskey Magazine

So far we have released a single malt, a pot still (highly non-compliant) and a rye – this is our first blend. We want to bring some love back to the category which is sadly neglected in Ireland. So neglected you will even struggle to find the category ‘Blended’ on a bottle. The term is not obligatory as the multi-nationals are slightly ashamed to look it in the eye. We’re not. This blend rocks.

What’s in the bottle? 45% Blackwater produced single malt, 45% Blackwater produced pot still (both five years old) and 10% seven-year-old grain whiskies, finished in stout casks from local Hopfully Brewing Company. This blend contains every permissible grain (barley, malt, wheat, oat, rye and maize), every type of Irish whisky (malt, pot still, grain) and thethere’s the stout. What could be more Irish? Nothing. Except perhaps some black pudding but that’s not allowed.

As with all Blackwater products, it’s not chill filtered or coloured.

Aged in bourbon barrels, finished in Hopfully Brewing Company stout casks.

Head Distiller John Wilcox says: ‘refined, complex and bold.’

Our Estal Wild Glass collection 1919 choker whisky bottle is produced with 100% post-consumer recycled glass, thus preventing the extraction of raw materials from the natural environment.

‘Blackwater Distillery are nothing if not creative (e.g. Tanora Gin). This is made from every grain permitted, a blend of 45% pot still, 45% single malt, 10% grain, and finished in Imperial Stout casks from Waterford’s Hopfully. Aromas of dark honey and caramel, creamy, nutty, smooth palate with a pepper and spice finish, properly complex and hugely enjoyable.’ Leslie Williams, Irish Examiner
